Everyone wants to have success. The easiest way to do that is to help create a small win first to boost up your confidence.
How to Create A Small Win
Have you ever tried to teach a child something? Do you start at an “expert” level or do you start with basics to create a small win to help build their confidence?
So for example, if you're teaching a child how to read, do you give them a book and say go figure it out? Or do you sit with them and sing the “ABC” song 100 times over the course of a few months. And then maybe you also look at a picture book with big letters and pictures to help them identify the letter with an object (O is for Octopus).
Recently, I had an opportunity to volunteer to help Kindergarten students recognize the letters of the Alphabet. I was given instructions to have them pick out the letters in their name (they had small magnet letters to choose from).
The first child got it right away – she found her letters and correctly spelled her name.
The second child looked at me with sad eyes … she found a W that she used as an M, but couldn't figure out any other letters in her name.
The third child recognized most of the letters to pull from, but she couldn't get it in the correct order.
I quickly deduced that the activity that was identified for me to work on was WAY to hard for 2 of the students.
So … I improvised! Because I didn't want to see that sad face of a child that didn't feel successful. I didn't want her to walk away from the activity not having a small win. I wanted her to feel successful.
I started singing the ABC song and pointed at each letter. Because ALL of them KNEW the ABC song, I created a small win for them so that they could feel PROUD of themselves. Then I asked each of them to each pick a letter of the alphabet and as I was singing, I'd get “STUCK” on that letter and I'd make funny noises and point at the letter.” The kids loved it and they had fun. (Listen – it's NO FUN to sit in a classroom when you didn't understand WHAT to do.) So that small win allowed me to move forward with helping 2 of the students with better recognition of the letters in their name.
So you may be wondering – ok Tricia, how in the world does that relate to me?
A Small Win for Adults (you included)
Even adults want to feel successful, right? But often times, the goals or the tasks that we have set out to accomplish are SO big (like a mountain) or SO far out into the future, it's hard to feel any sense of accomplishment. You can FIX that. Here's how.
Break up your goals / tasks! Create an opportunity for a SMALL WIN AND … here's the important piece that MOST adults won't do, but I'm telling you now, you NEED to start doing this …
CELEBRATE every time you make a small win!
Yep. You can!
You don't need to have a party … just ACKNOWLEDGE yourself. Find a friend that loves you and share your excitement. We have a Facebook Messenger group that goes all day long with people sharing their small wins and all of us rooting each other on. It's a pretty cool environment to be a part of. In fact, I can honestly say, I've NEVER been on a team that's so supportive of each other achieving success. And that's truly important to me – and possibly to you too. Because if people in your life are jealous of your success – you can't openly feel good about achieving it. And if you can't feel good about achieving a small win, how likely are you going to push harder to work on the NEXT small win? And then – how can you increase your confidence and climb that mountain of a goal you've set for yourself?
If you're not already on a team that's celebrating your success, we should talk.
